William McCann developed a love of photography at a very early age. Growing up in rural Putnam County New York, he got his first instamatic camera when he was 10 years old. By the time he was a teenager he was taking photo and darkroom courses as well as printing in his home darkroom and always seemed to have a camera hanging around his neck. Inspired by the works of Edward Weston, Minor White and Ansel Adams, McCann learned the zone system and took up large format field photography.
His fascination with the beauty and wonder of nature has been the main focus of his photographic work. Concentrating mostly in the northeast his images capture the spirit of the natural world and the serenity of rural landscapes. “I feel a deep sense of comfort when I’m surrounded by nature. I try to create images that help convey that sense of tranquility and connectedness”.
McCann has used many film formats in the past but now utilizes digital photography exclusively. According to McCann “the photographic image was never complete in the field but relied on post exposure processing and printing techniques to finalize the vision. Of course we still do that today but with digital imaging technology, photographers have much more powerful and diverse tools that allow us to create images that wouldn’t have been possible with silver halide technology.” William lives in Sherman,CT and is co-owner of Visual Impact.
